Description
In Japan there are many types of shoji, but traditionally the "ma-shoji" or common shoji was the most popular in the ordinary dwelling because it is the least time-consuming to make, yet in this simple form it nevertheless achieves a high level of aesthetic expression. The frame of the common shoji has three rails and a "hipboard" or "koshi-ita", which adds a sense of strength and stability. Inside the frame are the Kumiko to which the shoji paper is applied.
